One Quarter In, Three To Go...Progress Report.

Any good goal needs to be constantly measured and assessed if it is to be crushed. That is my intention, so here we go. Q1 of 2018 is in the books, three more to go!

Objective 1

Be a more present father, husband, and friend for people in my life.

  • KR: Don't bring a phone into social situations or if I do, don't take it out when I'm with people. Feedback to be provided by my lovely wife.
    • Grade: 50%
    • Note: Louise told me I was doing OK here, still room to grow. I'm going to try just leaving my phone in another room entirely, I clearly have issues with pulling it out still. Damn phones...
  • KR: Get at least one (1) major family vacation planned for 2018.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: We are all booked to go to Paris later this year!
  • KR: Take at least two (2) shorter weekend trips to unplug and relax.
    • Grade: 0%
    • Note: No quick trips taken yet but we have some plans in the works.
  • KR: Date night (or coffee date) with Louise at least twice a month.
    • Grade: 50%
    • Note: We haven't been able to get out twice a month so far although we have been doing more quality time at home to compensate. Babysitting should be helpful moving forward.
  • KR: Hang out with family or friends in-person...get away from social media at least twice a month.
    • Grade: 100% so far.
    • Note: I need to keep this up through the year but so far so good.

Objective 2

Learn things outside of my comfort zone.

  • KR: Take the MAT test as part of the application process.
    • Grade: 25%
    • Note: I've been studying to re-familiarize myself with some of the nuanced stuff I expect to be on the test. Specific testing time yet to be scheduled.
  • KR: Enroll in a Master's program focused on International Politics, Military Affairs, Global/National Security, or Intelligence Studies.
    • Grade: 25%
    • Note: Application has been started for the Citadel's program in international politics and military affairs.
  • KR: Apply for relevant scholarships to assist with schooling costs.
    • Grade: 50%
    • Note: Application process is well underway and to be completed soon.
  • KR: Read at least 20 books and take notes, striving for books that are outside my field. I'm going to consider re-reads that provide value in this count.
    • Grade: 50%
    • Note: Crushing it so far... :-)
  • KR: Post notes for all books that I read on this site.
    • Grade: 90%
    • Note: I've only got one book outstanding so far to get my notes posted this year so far (one also doesn't make a lot of sense as it's more of a daily log).
  • KR: Start working with one mentor outside of my field to help me see my challenges and opportunities from new and alternative perspectives.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: I started working with a mentor at our church in MD recently and it's been a pretty amazing experience so far. I've found that the additional layer of accountability from a perspective I often get a little self-confident on, has been helpful.
  • KR: 100% adherence to daily foreign language learning, my current focus is on French, Spanish, and Italian.
    • Grade: 85%
    • Note: I have slipped and broken my streak a few times this quarter but all in all I've still been progressing in the right direction with each language.

Objective 3

Lay the groundwork to start a company of my own that addresses a problem I believe needs to be solved.

  • KR: Build out a blue ocean strategy value graph for the three ideas that I'm working with.
    • Grade: 33%
    • Note: I've got the groundwork laid for one of my ideas and everything looks pretty promising. I've been working to flush out the idea MVP-style as a side hustle for right now, it seems to be picking up steam. What happens if I pour on more gas?
  • KR: For each value graph created, go through market and product validation steps with current professional network.
  • KR: Build out a customer persona for each validated idea.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: So far so good, but this number will probably change as I flush out the strategy for these other ideas and go through validation on them.
  • KR: Aim to release three (3) new blog posts focused on cyber security on this website.
    • Grade: 0%
    • Note: God I have failed here so far...ass to be kicked.
  • KR: Submit talks and training workshop content to at least five (5) conferences for 2018.
    • Grade: 80%
    • Note: 4 down, 1 to go.
  • KR: Start a 100 days of code learning goal for myself to brush off the cobwebs.
    • Grade: 0%
    • Note: Have not started this yet...been just a little bit busy ;-)

Objective 4

Resume volunteering my time and resources to change lives for the better.

  • KR: Get plugged into serving at our home church.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: I'm signed up to start volunteering with the live streaming and social media team with our church. This is perfect for me because it gets me familiarized with a skill that I want to develop for some of my side projects as well as contributing in a meaningful way to the mission there.
  • KR: Try to get two (2) Batman visits in to either local children's hospitals or other charity oriented events.
    • Grade: 0%
    • Note: None happened yet, but I've got something scheduled coming up soon!
  • KR: Continue with a regular, monthly tithe to our home church.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: We've been very fortunate to have been able to donate regularly to Lighthouse Church as well as support some families back in the Tenderloin in San Francisco through City Impact Church. We are incredibly grateful for being in the position we are to do this.
  • KR: Contribute a bi-weekly blog post to the Hack Your Cyber Career site to help others grow their careers in the field.
    • Grade: 75%
    • Note: Not perfect, but I've been pretty good about getting content posted to this blog. I'm tinkering around with the idea of more accessible mediums to deliver and publish content (podcasts, youtube, instagram, etc.)
  • KR: Release a weekly learning challenge for anyone looking to develop their cyber security skills.
    • Grade: 100%
    • Note: This challenge has been consistently released each week with more posts queued up.

Objective 5

Train my body, mind, and spirit to be more like Batman, a resilient, powerful, ass-kicking machine for good in this world!

  • KR: 95% adherence to whole 30 aligned nutrition.
    • Grade: 85% adherence so far as of today.
    • Note: I'm tracking my goal with the Android app called Habitbull;
  • KR: Get at least four (4) weight lifting workouts in per week.
    • Grade: 89% adherence so far.
    • Note: Some travel in the middle of the month threw me off but I think I have a strategy for combatting that on my next trip.
  • KR: Get least four (5) cardio sessions in per week as tracked on my shiny new Fitbit Ionic.
    • Grade: 82% as of today.
    • Note: I've been piggybacking on my weight lifting sessions and then trying to squeeze in light cardio later in the day when I can.
  • KR: 100% daily meditation and prayer to calm and focus my mind on what really matters.
    • Grade: 100% so far.
    • Note: I've been able to consistently start my days with meditation and prayer; this has been an amazing thing for me...I will absolutely be continuing this practice.

This last OKR is very much aligned with my Building the Bat project which you're welcome to browse and follow along with. There is a lot more detail over there for project Batman. If you want to support the Batman project then you can support me on Patreon as well.
